Sea donde sea que vivamos, habremos heredado ciertas costumbres, valores, lugares históricos y el medio ambiente. Debemos valorar y cuidar todas estas cosas, ya que son parte de nuestro pasado y debemos preservarlas para el futuro.
Nuestro patrimonio incluye elementos que podemos ver y tocar, como monumentos, piezas de museo, fotografías o archivos, entre otros.
También incluye el paisaje y las características geográficas del lugar, los animales que lo habitan, como pájaros, peces e insectos.
La gastronomía local es una herencia muy importante. Tanto lo que comemos como la forma de preparar dicha comida ha llegado a nosotros de generaciones pasadas.
Por supuesto, el patrimonio también incluye elementos inmateriales, como la música, danza, las leyendas locales, técnicas artesanales, tradiciones y memorias.
Todas estas cosas forman parte de nuestra identidad local, nos ayudan a entender el pasado y quienes somos en el presente. Nuestro deber es preservarlos, ¿pero por qué?
Preservar nuestra cultura y nuestras tradiciones nos da una sensación de orgullo y de pertenencia. También nos provee de una base para nuestro desarrollo futuro en turismo, agricultura, gastronomía, conservación del medio ambiente y entretenimiento. ¡Y también puede ser muy divertido!
EL 31 de Mayo celebramos el Día de Canarias en el colegio Saint Andrew’s. Estábamos encantados de ver como nuestros alumnos disfrutan de la cultura local, y de verles en su vestimenta tradicional. Aunque somos un colegio británico, estamos situado en la isla de Tenerife, y animamos a todos nuestros niños y niñas a que respeten, disfruten y conserven el patrimonio canario.
Wherever we live, we have inherited certain customs, values, historical sites and environmental features. These have been left to us from the past, and there are reasons why we should value them now and preserve them for the future.
Our heritage includes things we can see and touch, such as monuments, museum pieces, photographs, archives and so on.
It also includes the landscape and geographical features around us, and the animals, birds, fish and insects that inhabit our surroundings.
Local gastronomy is also something we inherit; the things we eat and the way we prepare them are part of our culture and are handed down through generations.
Then of course there are intangible things such as our music, dance, legends, artisan skills, traditions and memories.
All of these things are part of a local identity, they help us to understand the past and who we are now, and our duty is to preserve them. Why?
Preserving culture and traditions give us a sense of pride and belonging. It also gives us a base to build on for future development in tourism, agriculture, gastronomy, conservation of our natural landscape and entertainment. It can also be great fun!
On 31st May we celebrated ‘Día de Canarias’ at Saint Andrew’s school. We were delighted to see how much the children value their local culture and traditions, and we loved seeing them dressed in traditional costume. Saint Andrew’s is a British school, but it is located in Tenerife and we encourage all children to respect, enjoy and preserve Canarian heritage.
