How important is healthy eating at school?
We all know that children eat what they like. However, research has also demonstrated that children like what they are familiar with. If children are exposed to a wide variety of healthy options as early as possible, they will become accustomed to their taste and smell, and will learn to enjoy them, and even ask for them!
For busy parents faced with persuasive children, it is often difficult to broaden the ‘eating experience’ at home. It is also very expensive to buy products to experiment with, which might later be thrown away. This is where schools can help.
At Saint Andrew’s we try to ensure that all children at least try everything on the menu, and we have observed over the years how, as children become more familiar with foods they are not used to, they start to enjoy them. Then their peers notice that healthy can also be tasty, and start to copy their friends’ positive attitude.
Of course, there will always be certain foods that are not palatable to certain people. Exercising personal choice regarding what to eat is a pleasurable activity for humans. Nevertheless, part of educating the whole child includes raising their awareness of healthy foods, and exposing them to different tastes and textures, so that later in life they have a wider range of healthy options to choose from. This is part of our mission at Saint Andrew’s School.
