Children at Saint Andrew’s love their art lessons. Visual art is a fundamental characteristic of human civilization and reflects our experience, culture and individual personalities.
However, visual arts can also enhance, and be enhanced by other areas of the curriculum.
At Saint Andrew’s we learn about art and artists, we practise a variety of artistic techniques and we use different materials. However, we also learn through art, and exploit the invaluable benefits it brings, for example to language, science, history, geography and mathematics.
Visual representation of concepts is known to lead to higher-order thinking. Linking images to domains such as science and history encourages learners to engage more closely with curriculum content and therefore internalize it more efficiently. Artistic expression connected with concepts being studied also increases motivation and allows children to apply different sets of learning strategies.
So let’s look at some examples:
Years 3 and 4 at Saint Andrew’s are currently studying World War II in their history lessons. At the same time they are creating ‘War art’ including 3-D models and drawings.
Years 5 to 7 are enjoying their study of space. Their learning has been deepened and extended by the production of chalk and oil-pastel images of the planets.
Integrating art in this way creates a combination of creative, emotional and cognitive processes, making learning more memorable as well as more appealing.
We are very proud of our young artists at Saint Andrew’s, and will encourage them to continue creating masterpieces throughout their primary education!
