El día 14 de marzo de este año se celebró el Día Internacional de las Matemáticas. Por supuesto, en el colegio todos los días celebramos las matemáticas.
La mayoría de las personas tienden a amarlas o a detestarlas. Hay algunas estrategias que usamos aquí en Saint Andrew’s para mantener a nuestro alumnado interesado en teoría numérica, álgebra, geometría y aritmética:
- Primeramente, el profesorado muestra una actitud positiva hacia las matemáticas. Usamos la entonación de nuestra voz para transmitir entusiasmo, suspense, estímulo y diversión. Creemos que, si el maestro muestra amor por las matemáticas, los alumnos también se sentirán así.
- Intentamos relacionar conceptos matemáticos con situaciones de la vida cotidiana. Si desde una edad temprana los niños ven que las matemáticas son útiles para ellos en el mundo que les rodea, serán más propensos a querer esforzarse al máximo para conquistar esta asignatura.
- Animamos a nuestros alumnos a experimentar y a equivocarse. Les decimos que cuanto más difícil sea un problema, mejor se sentirán cuando lo solucionen. No hay una gran recompensa cuando completamos una tarea que no ha requerido de mucho esfuerzo, pero la satisfacción que se siente cuando algo por fin encaja es maravillosa.
- Relacionamos la memoria con la resolución de problemas. Las matemáticas, a menudo, necesitan que los alumnos memoricen, pero si un concepto se analiza y se vuelve relevante, ¡es mucho más fácil de recordar! Para lograr esto realizamos actividades divertidas como rompecabezas y acertijos, aplicando los elementos que deben ser recordados a las diferentes actividades y explorando lo útiles que han sido.
En palabras de Edsger W. Dijkstra, “No debería existir tal cosa como las matemáticas aburridas”. En Saint Andrew’s hacemos todo lo posible para que nuestros alumnos alberguen afición hacia esta asignatura que es tan misteriosa e intrigante, a la vez que lógica y pura.
How we keep our pupils interested in mathematics.
14th March of this year was International Day of Mathematics. Of course, at school every day is maths day!
Most people seem to either love or hate mathematics. These are some of the strategies we use at Saint Andrew’s to keep our pupils keen on number theory, algebra, geometry and arithmetic:
- Firstly, as teachers we demonstrate a positive attitudeto maths. We use voice intonation to transmit excitement, suspense, encouragement and fun. We believe that if the teacher appears to love mathematics, the students will feel the same.
- We try to relate mathematical concepts to real-life situations. From an early age, if children see that mathematics will be useful for them in the world around them, they are more likely to put all their effort into conquering this subject.
- We encourage our learners to experiment and make mistakes. We tell our pupils that the harder something is, the better they will feel when they get it right. Little reward is gained from completing a task that requires no effort, but the satisfaction felt when something clicks into place is wonderful.
- We relate memorisation to problem-solving. Mathematics often requires students to memorise, but if a concept is analysed and made meaningful, it is much easier to remember! To achieve this we use fun activities like brain-teasers and puzzles, applying the items that need to be remembered to different kinds of tasks and exploring how useful they were.
In the words of Edsger W. Dijkstra, ‘There should be no such thing as boring mathematics’. At Saint Andrew’s we do everything within our means to foster in our pupils a love of this subject which is so mysterious and intriguing yet at the same time logical and pure!
