Developing Enquiry Skills in Primary Education
According to the National Curriculum, at primary level we should be helping our students use and develop the following skills:
- Observation over time
- Pattern seeking
- Identifying, classifying and grouping
- Comparative and fair testing (controlled investigation)
- Research using secondary sources
Here are some examples of how the pupils at Saint Andrew’s have been using these skills:
Observation over time: We have been observing growth in plants under different conditions.
Pattern-seeking: In computing, children have used this skill in creating staged animations.
Identifying, classifying and grouping: Our younger students have been applying this skill to mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians.
Controlled investigation: Pupils have been writing up reports of experiments outlining the methods used to carry out controlled testing.
Research using secondary sources: Our older students have been learning how to verify information, expand their knowledge and evaluate reference sources.
There are many other skills involved in becoming inquisitive learners, such as problem-solving, questioning, making predictions, interpreting data and critical thinking. Our aim is that when Saint Andrew’s pupils move on to secondary education, they will already be competent investigators ready to apply their higher-order thinking skills to lifelong learning.
