Clever Connections
New research carried out by neuroscientists from McGill University, the University of Ottowa and the University of Zaragoza has confirmed that bilinguals are brainier!
MRI scans on monolingual and bilingual participants showed that using more than one language causes increased connectivity between different parts of the brain, and this has an effect on overall cognition. Connections become especially firm and frequent between the cerebellum and the left frontal cortex.
What’s more, it seems that the younger a child is when they learn more than one language, the more this affects neuroplasticity and generally improves thinking skills.
At Saint Andrew’s school we know our students are great ‘thinkers’, but science has once again given us another reason why!
