Summer maths for all!
In previous years, we have written about how parents can help our pupils keep their English up to scratch during the summer holidays.
At Saint Andrew’s we are proud to say that many of our students excel at mathematics. This year we would like to share some ideas to keep kids calculating while enjoying time with family and friends.
- Journeys: if you are travelling anywhere, talk about the distance, the length of time the journey takes, how high an aeroplane is flying, how much petrol the car will use. You can even have fun counting different colours of cars or keeping a log of how many animals or other things you see on the way.
- At the beach: How frequently do the waves reach the shore? How deep is the water? How many buckets of sand will we need to make this castle? Is sand heavier when it’s wet? And of course, how often will we need to apply sunscreen depending on the protection factor?
- Shopping: Don’t miss invaluable mathematical moments discussing weights, quantities, ingredient ratios and of course payment/ change. Opt to pay in cash sometimes, so that your children can practise their ‘money maths’!
- At home: Involve children in cooking, setting and checking times for activities (including bed!), arranging things in sequence, counting crockery as they help you put it away. Enjoy games and puzzles that keep their mental maths active.
These are just a few ideas to ensure that children remain aware of the mathematics all around us. Children love a challenge, so let’s keep them counting!
