How lucky we are!
March 2022. Primary age children have lived through a world pandemic, said to be the biggest challenge ever to their mental health and wellbeing, apart from its physical effects on some youngsters and their families.
At the same time, many children in different parts of the world were and are experiencing conflict, poverty and the devastating results of natural disasters.
Now we are witnessing how many thousands of children in Ukraine (and Russia) are once again trying to continue living and growing while the world around them has turned into chaos. Their resilience and bravery is impressive, but to see any child suffering is distressing for everybody.
As parents, teachers and child-carers this has caused us to reflect on many things we take for granted.
The children around us live and learn in complete safety. They sleep in warmth and peace in a familiar bedroom. They can celebrate their birthdays, their achievements, and life in general in any way they wish. If they feel sad or unwell, solutions are usually near at hand. They have their families, toys, friends, pets and home comforts around them, and there is food on the table every day. They feel safe, and they know that they are loved and cared-for. They enjoy ‘lifestyle-security’; their status quo is not immediately under threat.
At Saint Andrew’s School we are privileged to be working with such talented, happy and well-balanced children. However, we should also remember how lucky we are to be able to watch them live and grow safely. Our hearts go out to the children and their families, near and far, who cannot enjoy such safety and security.
